Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan
received a coronavirus jab on Wednesday, kick-starting the east African nation’s fight against the pandemic. The televised vaccination was a major departure from the policies of former president John Magufuli, who denied that coronavirus existed in Tanzania and claimed the vaccine was dangerous.
Google has become the first big US tech company to require its workers to be
vaccinated before they return to work on one of its campuses. Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, said the policy would start in the US “in the coming weeks” before being rolled out globally for its 144,000 employees.
Coronavirus infections are
receding in the former hotspot of India, according to the FT’s tracker, but are spiking in other parts of Asia. India reported new daily infections of 2.8 per 100,000 people on July 26, down from a peak of 28.6 cases per 100,000 individuals on May 9. St Louis county’s executive said a
mask mandate remains in place, despite a council vote to end the requirement just a day after it began in one of Missouri’s most populous cities. A mask mandate went into effect on Monday owing to rising numbers of Covid-19 infections and hospitalisations linked to the Delta variant in the St Louis area and across the state.
New York state workers will be required to be
vaccinated against Covid-19 or get tested regularly, Andrew Cuomo has announced. The governor of New York also said that patient-facing healthcare workers at state hospitals would need to be vaccinated and would not have the option of regular testing, in an effort to keep both patients and workers safe.
AstraZeneca announced on Wednesday that a second dose of its Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine carried
no extra risk of the rare blood clotting disorder associated with the first dose. A study funded by the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker and published in The Lancet found that after a second dose of the jab, 2.3 in 1m cases developed blood clots alongside a low platelet count — the same rate as in the unvaccinated population.
Fully vaccinated visitors from the US and EU will be allowed
to enter England without having to quarantine but will still have to take a pre-departure test followed by a PCR test after they arrive, the UK transport secretary confirmed on Wednesday. The rules will come into effect from 4am on August 2, Grant Shapps said.
